Expert Answers about Chevrolet Hitch Pins and Clips

  • How Does a Clip Work with the Threaded Hitch Pin on a Swagman Trailer Hitch Mount Bike
  • With a threaded hitch pin, a clip is just a fail safe. When the threaded pin is properly tightened down it will not come out and so the clip is not required. I made a short video that demonstrates putting a clip on hitch pin that might help.

  • Is The Hitch Pin On The Swagman Trailhead Hitch Bike Rack, # S63360, Attach Wth A Clip Or Threaded
  • On the Swagman Trailhead Hitch Bike Rack, # S63360, the hitch pin is a threaded bolt (no nut) and uses a clip. The hitch pin will thread into the shank of the bike rack and then after it is tightened down the clip is inserted through the hitch pin. We also offer a Swagman Locking Threaded Hitch Pin, # S64029, that will allow you to lock the bike rack to the receiver hitch. I am sending the instructions on the bike rack and it shows the hitch pin and how it connects.

  • How Does One Use Part # PC3 In Conjunction With A Trailer Hitch Cover
  • The Clip that is included with the # PC3 hitch pin is made of spring steel. The spring action of the clip holds it onto the grooved end of the hitch pin, keeping the hitch pin from sliding out of the hitch receiver tube. There is no weight bearing on the clip so it is not subjected to forces strong enough to remove clip. When installing the Michigan State Spartans hitch cover, item # AMG100277, you will insert the cover into the 2 inch reciever hitch on the vehicle and secure it with the...

  • Which Way Should 5th Wheel Hitch Pull Pins Face When Installing a 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch
  • The pins will need to be installed so the clips is on the outboard side on a slider. If they are on the inside it can interfere with the slider mechanism and cause damage to the hitch or could result in injury. Always doublecheck the clip location before sliding the hitch. You could also use pull pin lock plates, # RP58093, for a more secure connection. They are also supposed to be on the outboard side.

  • Procedure for Removing Fifth Wheel Hitch from Bed Rails
  • Removal of your Fifth Wheel hitch # RP30047 from the bed rails is very simple. Where the legs of the hitch attach to the bed rails, each of the four legs is secured by a retaining pin. The pin is secured by a clip that can be slid off of the pin. (See related photo.) Remove the clip from all four pins, slide out the retaining pins, and pull straight up on the hitch. I would recommend having a helper assist with removing the hitch, which can weigh more than 100 lbs. To replace the hitch,...

  • Should a Locking Hitch Pin be Purchased to Help Keep a Hitch Cover from Being Stolen
  • A trailer hitch cover like the Rubber Hitch Cover # 22281 is not one that can be locked, but since it is a common piece it really isn't in too much danger of being stolen. However, if you you are looking at a hitch cover that is a little more unique, like the part # HTCC11805, then I do recommend going with a locking hitch pin like part # e98880 as opposed to a typical pin and clip like part # PC3. This will help to deter theft of your cover. Please note that the lock and clip/pin numbers...

  • Removing the Head of the Reese 16K 5th Wheel Hitch
  • On your Reese 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch - Dual Jaw - 16,000 lbs # RP30047, to get to the retaining clip you mentioned, you will want to remove the hitch head and that can be done really easily. There is a pin with a snap ring on the back of the hitch in the center. You will simply remove the snap ring and pin and then back that large pivot pin out from the cross member to remove the head. I've attached a video to assist and this portion is toward the end of that video at the 4:20 mark. Let...

  • How to Remove and Reinstall the Retaining Clips on a Curt Round Bar Weight Distribution System
  • To remove the retaining clips # 17109 on a Curt weight distribution system with round bars you would first remove the bottom screws holding them on. Then you would push the clips up so the wider part of the hole can slip off the top pin. The top pin fits into the groove in the spring bar when inserted into the head. If the pins are also being replaced pull out the old ones and then insert the new ones. To install the clips you would reverse the above process.

  • Can the Reese Pull Pin Locking Plates Be Used On An M5 Hitch Head?
  • The Reese Pull Pin Lock Plates for 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches # RP58093 are designed for any 1/2" pull pin, however they were meant to be used with a lock like # ML140DLH so they are really more geared toward the pull pins that secure the base to the rails. So with that being said, your only real option is to use the supplied spring clips.

  • Is the Same Hitch Bolt Used on the DoubleDown Bike Rack in Both a 1-1/4 Inch and 2 Inch Hitch
  • You would use the same hitch bolt with the DoubleDown bike rack whether you are using it in a 2 inch hitch or a 1-1/4 inch hitch. The clip that goes on the end of the pin is a fail safe. So in the unlikely event that the bolt unthreads itself it cannot fall out because of the clip. That is the clip's only purpose so it really doesn't matter how far it is from the receiver so long as you have it on there.

  • Where Does Electric Brake Emergency Break Away Cable Attach
  • I recommend you attach Tow Ready Trailer Break Away Kit, # 50-85-315, to your vehicle to a tie down point in the bed of your truck. You could also use a stake pocket tie down and attach the cable to it. Or you could run the cable down to the safety chain loop on the bumper hitch if your vehicle is so equipped. Finally, you could attach the cable to the rails installed in the bed of the truck. The thing to remember is that the place the cable is attached to needs to be strong enough that,...
